Self-Rule
Serving the Plan with Self-Rule
We are in a momentous time in which the Masters of Wisdom are working intensively for the divine Plan to manifest and uplift humanity. The human responsibility in this is very high. We can contribute to the Plan by uplifting ourselves to the Kings of Beauty, that is, to the plane of the Soul, taking responsibility for ourselves and governing ourselves with self-rule. On the other hand, we can also drag everything down by remaining in the personality realms and by not connecting decisively with divine energy. We then live only with our personality and play around in the world.
People who are building their personality are centred on the seeking of recognition, impressing others and ambitiously advancing themselves. People with wisdom promote wisdom and not themselves. One of the fundamentals of discipleship is that we take responsibility for our actions, make our own decisions and rule ourselves. We rule ourselves when we are sufficiently well developed in our consciousness and do not need to be told what to do in a particular situation, at a particular place or at a particular time. Self-rule means we regulate and control our thoughts, action and behaviours without external intervention.
Initiates are not appointed, directed or governed by others. They are self-ruled, independent and self-appointed. They remain as souls and act according to the requirements of time and place. They do their work impersonally and almost incognito and then move on. They are attuned to the Plan of nature, the Divine Will, and act according to this Plan. Their self-governing status is called “Swaraj” in Eastern wisdom, meaning self-governed. Swaraj is the name of the 7th ray.
In the presence of a person of good will who is stably connected to the soul, the stability of our alignment with the soul is also strengthened. Through regular association and cooperation with such stable people of good will, we slowly develop an awareness of the already existing Plan. When we cooperate with the Plan, the Plan guides us with ease. When we misunderstand the concept of freedom, saying, “I want to do what I wish to do”, we create a plan within a plan. We can do this, but we will not progress as long as we are implementing our own plan. We wait until we can hear and follow the Plan of God. Then we can do much good. The highest purpose of self-knowledge is to serve the Plan. The great Masters of experience have said, “Father, thy will be done, not mine.”
Normally, a person may have a plan for the day, but they can easily be overwhelmed by all kinds of external things. External life influences them so much that their plans often fall by the wayside. True aspirants are guided and regulated from within and are not easily distracted by external forces. By taking responsibility for ourselves and connecting with the divine energy in a continuous and regular practice, self-rule begins, and our outer life also becomes regulated.
There is an inner light in the spine called the Kundalini. It is connected to spiritual awakening. When we govern ourselves and regularly connect with the inner Light in the spine, we do not do things without reason. We do not go out and speak when it is not necessary. Everything is done purposefully and appropriately.
If another person displays their personality in an unskilful way, we rise up to the soul level and thus are able to look with compassion at the personality and the soul of the other. When we observe as a soul, we strengthen the soul aspect in others, whether they recognise it or not. This is White Magic.
Don't Impose Anything
If people seek our advice, we give it, but nothing more. We let them live as they wish. At best, we can offer a suggestion, but we should not decide for others. Giving unsolicited advice is intrusive. We are often in a hurry to give advice, thinking that it is helpful. But it is not. Our power of discernment must come into play. We are to be listeners, observers, as well as friendly, cooperative and, in deep listening, help them to govern themselves.
When others ask for guidance, we listen first, ask questions for more information and then give advice in the form of information. We simply share something with them, but we do not bombard them with our words. We express it in a friendly, gentle manner, without imposing anything on them. Imposing our ideas on others, expecting others to follow our advice, can be, in the view of the Masters of Wisdom, a level of violence, aggression and interference. A Master respects his disciples and never interferes with their freedom of choice and actions. The students can choose; nothing is forced upon them. A disciple chooses to follow the path of Truth of his own accord and not because of external pressure. They follow their own inner urge, not because of publicity or promotion.
Many people want to control and dominate others because of their position. In many circles, it is considered perfectly normal to push people into something or even to make decisions for them. This is an animal instinct. One tries to influence others so that they take on thoughts or intentions. As long as we do not leave behind this instinct to dominate others, we cannot rise to the divine realms of our own being. Divinity is such that we are to rule ourselves and allow others to rule themselves. No power, no rule or government should be imposed. Master CVV therefore referred to the group associated with him as the “Yoga School Friends Society”.
The Quality of Governments
In the past, there were kings, and now there are governments that rule us according to their knowledge. Ruling others is a great responsibility. Ruling oneself is the basic requirement for taking on governmental responsibility.
Leaders are part of humanity, just like us. We cannot expect an ideal government on the planet in the Dark Age of Kali, for ignorance is widespread and differs only gradually.
Many governments of the present age are not capable of ruling humanity with goodwill, because they do not have the necessary skills. They do not listen to the wise people of society but have submitted themselves to the interests of money, commerce and the economy. They do not adhere strictly to the Law, act selfishly and cannot really maintain order. If a ruler is corrupt, he follows unwise paths. Some leaders of governments do follow the Truth, and sometimes a government is better in parts.
The average ability to rule oneself and the average level of personal responsibility determine the overall quality of government we have in a country. The average level of corruption in the entire population determines the corruption of the government. If the level is high, we get a corrupt government. If it is low, the government is less corrupt. Changing a party or a leader does not change anything; the change lies in consciousness. If the general consciousness of a nation changes for the better, the country will have a better government accordingly.
We choose our leaders according to our quality. When we choose self-rule, we adopt a corresponding way of life and certain rhythms and devote ourselves to good deeds. In this way, we slowly gain access to the divine intelligences within us, through which we can perform actions that are normally not possible. It takes many transformations before we can remain stable within ourselves in the acute case of a crisis. Self-rule leads to group self-rule, then to community self-rule and finally to national self-rule. Spiritually, this is a progressive path of governance.
The Inner Government
The Lord of the World, the King of Kings, created the Law. Since we are all his subjects, he occasionally brings about adjustments and corrections so that we do not destroy ourselves. He has his own inner government, and that is why we have the centre of Shambala with Sanat Kumara (Lord of the World) and also the Hierarchy, which lets us know how we should actually live. The centres of Will, Knowledge and Activity are to be connected with each other. Internally, we connect with the thousand-petalled lotus at the top of the head (Sahasrara), the centre in the middle of the forehead (Ajna) and the heart centre (Anahata), externally with Shambala, Sanat Kumara and Maitreya. In this way, we attune ourselves to the larger system. It is as if we are connecting with a greater energy or magnet. Then we too become a magnet. We only need to strive to connect with the divine energy. When we decide to cooperate with the Plan, our determination is supported by energies from higher planes.
