The Asvins
The Winged Twin Horses
In the wisdom teachings, the fiery breath of the cosmos has two complementary parts that are called the Asvins. These fiery breaths together form the immeasurable expression of space and time. The Asvins are above everything in creation. They cause the emergence of creation and its dissolution, the birth and death of beings, planets, solar systems, etc. The name ‘Asvins’ means the ‘Twin Devas’. They are the twin energy of the Male-Female God and of Spirit-Matter.
The Asvins are called ‘Nasatyas’, which was translated by Madame Blavatsky as ‘the not untrue beings’. This double negative (‘not untrue’) indicates that the Asvins exist beyond the real and unreal and are present in every dimension, from the smallest to the largest form. However, they are not visible unless we focus on them and their presence. Unless we turn to the occult dimension, we cannot recognise their presence.
The Asvins belong to the supra-cosmic plane, i.e. they are eternal intelligences that exist beyond the cosmos. Only a few intelligences are called supra-cosmic. When they descend into the cosmic, solar and planetary planes, they become active in creation. Even when the Asvins enter into nature, they remain untouched and do not mix with nature.
The Asvins are called by different names on different planes and are also depicted differently. In the book of Genesis in the Bible, they are called the two Cherubim, the winged angels who guard the gate of the Garden of Eden with flaming swords. They also guarded the Ark of the Covenant in the Torah. In the Vedas, the Asvins are described as two winged twin horses who preside over the dual or twin existence in nature, i.e. they rule over the alternating functions such as day and night, waxing and waning moon or the northern and southern half of the year. They govern the lateral division of our constitution and the symmetry of right and left in the eyes, ears, hands and feet, the two halves of the head, the nose and the tongue.
The twin devas are sometimes described as two birds sitting on the same tree and chirping: one bird eats and savours the fruit of the tree, the other enjoys the sight. This means that one descends to the planetary plane and the other remains on the solar plane.
The Healing Devas
There are many stories about the twin gods. It is said that they were born through the Sun to serve our solar system. They are the healing devas of the highest order and divine fire magicians. They initiated the science of medicine and the art of healing on this earth. They are therefore described as the first healers and meditated upon as the devas of medicine and healing. Through them, the seers knew how to heal people's illnesses on the vital level with the help of electricity - either mechanically or directed by the Will. This also means that life is nothing other than electricity in all its functions, known and unknown to the modern scientist.
The Asvins are the doctors of the gods and the healers of mankind. Every night we are renewed and healed by them during sleep. They heal the individual consciousness from being affected by the various beginnings and endings of things and of life. They give us the power to transcend the beginnings and endings of everything.
The Asvins rule over the centripetal and centrifugal pulsations of inhalation and exhalation, over the healing energies of Prana and Apana. Since ancient times, the twin devas have often been invoked for miraculous healings and even for the rejuvenation of an old body into a young and powerful body. They bestow the power to experience the peace and serenity of eternity and to live in it. If we consciously intonate the invocation ‘Sam no Mitra Sam Varunaha…’ and visualise the Asvins, we can feel their presence.
Content and Container
The Asvins twins cannot be separated from each other. It is the state at the cosmic level of creation where the one energy called ‘Brahman’, which is ineffable, becomes the male-female God. Mitra is the masculine principle and Varuna the feminine. In the scriptures, this male-female God is also called ‘Father and Mother’ or ‘Shiva-Shakti’ etc. The male and female energies remain the same. The masculine and feminine energies always remain together in kindness and together perform the play of creation.
As existence and consciousness, both are always there. Mitra is the spirit; Varuna is the original light that gradually becomes the different plains of matter. Mitra remains unchanging but always in connection with the feminine dimension, which continuously develops different stages of matter. This is what we call ‘simultaneous experience of different planes of existence.’ Mitra and Varuna play with each other, and the beings can enter the different planes of consciousness and experience all planes. That is why the Scriptures say that when Mitra is in the supra-cosmic state, Varuna is in the cosmic state to contain the supra-cosmic.
Mitra corresponds to the content and Varuna is the container; the content fills the container. In terms of the Super-soul or spirit, the soul is in the Varuna state as the container of the spirit. But when it comes to the personality, the same soul becomes Mitra: the inhabitant of the personality is the soul, the personality is the container.
Agastya and Vasishta
The Asvins Mitra and Varuna descend as the great Rishis Vasishta and Agastya, as the great Bear and Sirius, as Neptune and Uranus, and also as the hierarchy in the Himalayas and those in the blue mountains of South India. Uranus is the planetary form of Varuna and the energy of Aquarius. Varuna is the form-giving and also the form-breaking energy. It is a scientific force. Neptune is an expression of the energy of Mitra, a mystical and magical force. Mitra is associated with the East, Varuna with the West. Varuna dissolves forms in order to create better forms. He has the task of preparing better bodies so that Mitra can shine forth.
Agastya, Master Jupiter, is an equivalent of Varuna's energy. His ashram is connected to the southern hemisphere and the South Pole. Master CVV comes from this ashram. The Ashram relating to the North Pole was originally called the Ashram of Vasishta; now in the Aquarian Age, it is called the Ashram of the Hierarchy. The Hierarchy informs about the reality of the soul. This ashram is headed by Lord Maitreya. Maitreya is thus named because on our planet he essentially represents the Mitra energy of the supra-cosmic plane, in relation to the indwelling soul and its consciousness. ‘Mitra’ is the root of the word Maitreya. He is called Maitreya because he is friendly to all beings, regardless of their behaviour. For Lord Maitreya, all beings on this planet are acceptable and pleasant. He does not play the game of love and hate.
The evolution of the soul belongs to the Ashram of Hierarchy, the evolution of form belongs to the Ashram of Master Jupiter. This ashram works closely with the Manu, who also works to give form to living beings and especially to human beings. This is a very simplified understanding.
The Aquarian Impulse
When the Varuna Hierarchy decided to accelerate the improvement of forms in our system, the energy came down to Earth via Sirius, Regulus, Uranus and Halley's Comet. It was received by Master CVV and anchored on the planet. The energy of Varuna is also called ‘the ray of Uranus’. Varuna is the medium for the cosmic plane and Uranus is the medium for the solar plane. Thus, the ‘Aquarian impulse’ has descended from the cosmic plane to the solar plane and from there to the planetary system. It was anchored on our Earth on 31 March 1910, through a very great effort by Master CVV, who received it in a very extraordinary way and transmitted it to the planet for 7 years, 7 months and 11 days.
The energy we receive when we say ‘Namaskarams Master CVV’ is the very highest energy, the Origin. It touches us and begins to work in us like an electric current. Initially, we do not know what it does or how it works. It is the Varuna energy that works so that the consciousness, the Mitra energy, can work through us unhindered. The Asvins accelerate the evolution of beings on the planet; they are described as the Masters of Speed. The yoga of Master CVV is described as a yoga of the New Age. The most important aspect that is new about this yoga path is speed. The layers of matter are reorganised so that we can experience consciousness without hindrance. The Asvins do things at such a high speed that we don't even feel the speed.
We have personalities that limit us in many ways. If we do the prayer regularly, the Master can adjust our system. We sit and he repairs. We can observe how he repairs. He even gives us instructions on how to work with the body and he also imparts knowledge. This is the difference between the yoga that we generally know and the yoga that Master CVV gave.
